The Evolution of Community Solar

At first, community solar was just that, small groups of neighbors building a local solar project and sharing the energy output.  These projects were almost always interconnected with the utility, but usually initially conceived without utility input or active participation.

From humble beginnings, community solar has expanded, particularly in states such as Colorado where regulations create financial incentives for participating customers.

Today, there are many varieties of community solar operating in fully regulated states and those states with retail choice.  Facilities are owned by community groups, third party developers and utilities.  Increasingly utilities are launching programs which convey real benefits to customers and also hold non-participating customers harmless; this can be done through careful rate design and risk mitigation strategies.
