Scaling methane-reduction solutions in livestock

May 16, 2025 By 3Degrees Staff

Background

Alga Biosciences, a pioneer in sustainable livestock practices, has partnered with 3Degrees, a global leader in climate solutions, to launch a program to bring Alga Biosciences’ innovative, methane-reducing feed additive to market. The program aims to empower beef and dairy producers with a scalable, high-impact solution to reduce GHG emissions from livestock.

By leveraging Alga Biosciences’ low-cost feed additive, this initiative targets significant reductions in methane emissions—a highly potent GHG—produced through enteric fermentation, a  natural digestive process in ruminant animals like cattle. At the same time, the program enables producers to access voluntary carbon markets, creating environmental and economic opportunities.

The program

The initiative launched with a pilot program at Fiscalini Farmstead, a fourth-generation dairy and cheese producer in California renowned for its commitment to sustainability. During the trial, Alga’s feed additive will be provided at no cost to non-milk-producing heifers, enabling Fiscalini to reduce emissions and generate high-quality carbon credits, unlocking new economic opportunities.

To help scale the program, 3Degrees provides critical project financing, manages rigorous monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV), and commercializes carbon credits. The company also works closely with regulatory bodies, including the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), to receive project-level approvals and ensure the safety and efficacy of this innovative feed additive.

The partnership between 3Degrees, Alga Biosciences, and Fiscalini Farmstead highlights the power of collaboration in addressing agricultural methane emissions. By leveraging transformative technology, robust MRV frameworks, and market based incentives, this program delivers a scalable, high-impact, and derisked model for reducing emissions while supporting economic resilience for producers. The program at Fiscalini Farmstead demonstrates the potential for widespread adoption, advancing meaningful progress toward broad agricultural decarbonization.
