3Degrees, a leading global climate solutions provider and certified B Corporation is proud to announce it has listed the first-ever biochar project on the Climate Action Reserve (CAR) registry. This milestone showcases 3Degrees’ commitment to expanding access to high-integrity, durable carbon removal solutions.

The project, developed by Southwest Biochar, began as a pilot facility to test biochar production. In January 2025, it expanded into a full-scale commercial system, marking a significant step in scaling biochar as a viable carbon removal solution.

In March 2024, CAR introduced its first biochar protocol, designed to establish clear and rigorous guidelines for biochar-based carbon removal. While initial adoption was limited, 3Degrees worked closely with CAR to facilitate the successful listing of this pioneering project—ensuring transparency and credibility through rigorous documentation and approval in the issuance of carbon credits.

“We see CAR’s biochar methodology as a robust and prescriptive framework that reduces uncertainty for project developers and buyers,” said Wyatt Catron, Project Development Manager, Carbon Markets at 3Degrees. “This listing sets a precedent for future biochar projects and reinforces the growing recognition of biochar’s role in durable carbon removal.”

“As a pioneer for developing a biochar market in the Southwest there have been many challenges along the way, but being the first biochar project listed on the CAR registry is exciting for us and shows our commitment to being the leader in biochar production, carbon removal, and restoring forest health in the Southwest,” said Tyson Nicoll, CEO of Southwest Biochar.

As the first biochar project listed on CAR, Southwest Biochar is paving the way for additional projects. Another biochar project is expected to be finalized for listing in the coming months, further expanding the market for high-quality biochar-based carbon credits.

For buyers, this development presents a new opportunity to support biochar projects through a well-established carbon crediting platform. Forward offtake agreements are available for those interested in securing future credits.
