International renewable energy certificate (I-REC) demand in Colombia has grown to over seven terawatt hours (TWh) per year since 2020, rendering it among the top five Latin American I-REC countries by demand.
Hydro and bioenergy account for about 25% of Colombia’s energy mix, yet the country’s goal to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 places it on the path toward increased buildout of solar and wind projects. Accordingly, there is an anticipated increase in availability of solar- and wind-generated I-RECs from Colombia, allowing for more choices for I-REC buyers.
