Mexico hosts two certificate schemes: International renewable energy certificates (I-RECs) and the national CEL (Certificados de Energías Limpias) program. I-RECs are the favored choice for voluntary buyers, as they allow for consumer choice on specifications, such as the technology or the commissioning year of the power plant producing the I-RECs. CELs are more generic and do not discern between such specifications, but are rather awarded to any power plant deemed clean by Mexican law and commissioned less than 10 years ago.
I-REC buyers in Mexico can choose how they support renewable energy, from the technology to the commissioning year of the power plant.
I-RECs can be sourced forward up to three years.
