Dan Kalafatas

Co-Founder and Chairman of the Board
With 3Degrees (Previously Part of 3 Phases) Since 2002

In graduate school at Stanford in 2002, Dan sat in on a speech delivered by T.J. Glautier, former Deputy Secretary and COO of the U.S. Department of Energy under the Clinton administration, that changed his life. It resonated so much it inspired him to dedicate his business talents towards playing a part in building the renewable energy sector in the United States to address climate change.

In 2007, Dan co-led the formation of 3Degrees with Steve McDougal, a spin-off of the 3 Phases Energy Services division Dan co-founded and ran from 2002 through 2007. Under Dan’s leadership as CEO (until 2015), 3Degrees successfully entered the corporate and utility green power and carbon markets, and converted to a Certified B Corporation. Today, Dan leads 3Degrees seven-person Board of Directors and serves as Chairman of 3Degrees focusing on the company’s long-term corporate strategy, strategic initiatives, and risk management.

In addition to his role as Chairman, Dan is an active investor in clean energy infrastructure, companies, and tax attributes.  He also applies his expertise, organization building experience, and board leadership as a member of the Advisory Board of the Dartmouth College Arthur L. Irving Institute for Energy and Society, Advisory Council of the Dartmouth College Climate Collaborative, and Governing Council of the Northern Sierra Partnership focused on conservation efforts in the northern Sierra Nevada.

Originally from a milltown outside of Boston, Dan resides just north of the Golden Gate Bridge with his wife of 25 years and their three college, high school, and middle school-aged children where he can often be found hiking California’s golden hills.
