Matt Rogers is a seasoned independent board director and global leader in energy, sustainability, and technology. With over three decades of experience advising clients in more than 30 countries, Matt has helped organizations drive operational performance, shape policy and regulatory strategy, and navigate the evolving demands of energy transition.
During his 20+ year tenure at McKinsey & Company, Matt co-founded and scaled the firm’s Sustainability Practice, supporting a broad range of clients—from Fortune 500 companies to emerging innovators—on climate and energy solutions.
From 2009 through 2010, Matt served as Senior Advisor to the U.S. Secretary of Energy, where he led implementation of the Department of Energy’s $35 billion in Recovery Act appropriations. His portfolio spanned nuclear waste cleanup, solar deployment, energy efficiency, and biofuels, along with oversight of $40 billion in clean energy loan guarantees—including support for Tesla’s first factory and several of the largest wind and solar projects in the U.S.
Matt currently serves on the Board of Directors of Exelon, the nation’s largest electric and gas transmission and distribution utility, where he chairs the Operations, Safety, and Customer Experience Committee and sits on the Audit Committee. Additionally, he is an Operating Partner at Ajax Strategies, a venture capital firm focused on climate innovation. In this capacity, he serves on the board of Natel Energy (fish-safe hydropower) and previously served on the boards of Ojjo (solar infrastructure) and Upstream Tech (AI for water and weather).
Matt is a lecturer at the Stanford Graduate School of Business and the Doerr School of Sustainability where he teaches courses on rapid decarbonization and scaling sustainability solutions, and the UC Berkeley Haas School of Business, where he teaches project finance. He is also the co-author of Resource Revolution: Capturing the Biggest Business Opportunity in 100 Years (2014), which explores how the convergence of information and resource technologies can transform global energy and resource systems.
Outside of work, Matt enjoys cycling, skiing, cooking, reading, and cheering on the Golden State Warriors. He and his wife of 38 years have three adult children.
