South Africa Renewable Energy Projects

South Africa, the largest economy in Africa and a key member of the South African Power Pool, is steadily increasing its reliance on renewable energy. Renewables currently provide about 11% of South Africa’s electricity, but this is set to rise significantly. Wind and solar dominate the South Africa I-REC market, but there’s also the availability of biomass and hydro technologies.

By 2030, the country aims to source nearly 49% of its electricity from renewables as it reduces coal dependency. Demand for South African I-RECs has increased significantly, with a 62% rise from 2023 to 2024. I-RECs can be sourced forward by up to five years.
