Decarbonizing a key fertilizer input
The Low Carbon Fertilizer Alliance (LCFA) brought about the installation of nitrous oxide capture technology at CF Industries’ Verdigris Nitric Acid plant in Oklahoma in 2025. By implementing N2O capture technology, the project will lead to the avoidance of over 2 million metric tons CO2e over the next five years.
Partnering with CF Industries, 3Degrees established a baseline to implement nitrous oxide destroying catalysts. Since October 2025, the project has succeeded in reducing emissions by up to 80%.
Because N20 capture technology is not yet common practice in the U.S., the project provides essential proof-of-concept, demonstrating that high-impact emissions reductions are technically feasible, economically viable, and highly additional.
